Ok guys, whether you know it or not, Robert Longo is the man. Chances are you do know that. But either way I wanna talk about it. “Men in the Cities” turned my brain inside out when I first saw it. Often imitated but never duplicated, the images are inarguably striking, emotional, and cool. Some copycats include: Apple iPod, (as also noted by David Byrne here) DDC Lab, the Met’s Dr. Atomic posters (note: Longo’s show ‘The Sickness of Reason’ (‘The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters’… Goya anyone?) featured several paintings of atomic mushroom clouds) and many others.

His work deserves digging into as do his musical collaborations, my favorite being with Rhys Chatham. I saw the man (looking sharp in all black) jam along with “Guitar Trio” (its my life too Rhys) at the Issue Project Room in January of 2007 while his film was projected.

Longo was quoted as saying, “Dying young is the easy way out. It’s much harder to keep your edge and keep it going.” I say, Robbie you’re a saw blade, sharp all the way around. K$
